Chapter 19
Kenzie
âWhat do you mean the signal just disappeared?â Sloan says irritably, holding open the trailer door, his body blocking me from coming inside.
âIâm saying itâs gone.â I take a deep breath, trying to keep the panic out of my voice. âShe went to town, went home, and then for some reason she drove up into the mountains. Then the signal just went blank. Just like what happened with my uncleâs birds.â
âCalm down, itâs probably just a glitch,â he says, frowning. âBut we should check it out just in case. Ryan is resting but Iâll have him look into it as soon as heâs up. Iâm sure it will be fine. Or maybe she gave the necklace to someone else.â
I roll my eyes at him. âWho would she give it to? Sloan, Iâm worried.â
His irritated expression softens and he takes a few steps down the stairs, letting the door shut behind him.
âLook, Kenz.â He puts a hand softly on my shoulder, kneading the base of my neck a few times in a way that instantly makes the knots of tension fall away. âI know that you feel sorry for this girl, and think she might hold the answers to this puzzle, but we barely know her. Giving her that necklace was probably crossing a line in the first place, but we donât need to obsess over her every move. We donât owe her anything.â
âBut sheâs just a kid,â I say, hurt that he doesnât even seem to care that she might be missing. âAnd sheâs been through so much. I just want to help her.â
âBecause youâre a good person. Just donât take it too far. My duty is to Ryan first. But I promise as soon as he wakes up Iâll advise him on the situation.â
âBut she could be anywhere by then,â I argue, but stop when he gives me that signature Sloan glare. âFine. If you wonât help me then Iâll find somebody who can.â
âKenzie, stop acting like a child. It will only be an hour or so. You can wait that long.â
âA child?â I knock his hand away, glaring at him with growing anger. âIs that seriously what you think?â
âNo.â He rubs a hand across his face. âWell, only when you act like one.â
âOh, well, donât worry then. I donât need a babysitter. Iâll be just fine on my own.â
âCome on, Kenzieâ¦â
I shoot my middle finger at him over my shoulder and keep walking.
Uncle Jackâs work tent is full when I stomp inside, still simmering from my encounter with Sloan. Everyone is either bustling excitedly around the monitors or packing our fieldwork gear into the hard plastic totes.
âWhatâs happening?â I ask, pausing in the doorway.
âThe Vauxâs swift,â Uncle Jack says excitedly, pulling me into the tent and spinning me in a little circle. âA handful of trackers just went back online out of the blue. Theyâre now about twenty miles from where they first reappeared. Weâre about to head out to see if we can spot any.â
âWow, really? Iâll come with you.
